Exploring Life with AI: A Week Following AI Assistant Advice

Turning to AI for Daily Life Decisions

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of our daily routines, but what happens when you completely hand over decision-making to AI assistants? From shopping to fitness and even parenting, the possibilities seem endless, but are these chatbots ready to replace human expertise? In this experiment, a group of users put AI to the test in various aspects of their lives.

Shopping with AI: Convenience or Chaos?

Shopping can be overwhelming, especially during the holiday season. AI assistants like Perplexity, Amazon’s Rufus, and ChatGPT were tasked with simplifying the process. While Perplexity offered a mix of amusing and impractical suggestions, such as children’s baking sets and novelty sweatshirts, ChatGPT stood out by providing thoughtful and personalized gift ideas. For example, it suggested unique options like custom heirloom recipe boards or artisanal baking ingredients, which helped streamline the decision-making process.

However, the lack of an automated return or follow-up feature highlighted current limitations. While these AI tools excel in brainstorming, they fall short in executing the entire shopping journey seamlessly.

Parenting with AI: Sleep-Training Challenges

Parenting is an area where emotional support and expertise are crucial. One participant used ChatGPT to sleep-train their four-month-old baby using the Ferber method. Despite its technical understanding of the process, the AI assistant struggled with emotional nuances, often offering generic advice like using white noise or earplugs. Attempts to humanize the experience by using Character.ai to create a ‘nanny’ persona named Lindsay also fell short, as it lacked the empathy and adaptability of a real expert.

While the AI provided accurate intervals for sleep training, its inability to proactively engage or address emotional concerns made it feel more like a search engine than a true assistant.

Fitness and Health: A Mixed Bag

Another participant turned to Google’s Gemini chatbot for fitness advice. The AI provided basic but accurate guidance on nutrition and exercise, including a workout regimen involving squats, lunges, and planks. It also suggested plant-based protein sources like legumes and tofu for a vegan diet.

While the advice was helpful for beginners, it lacked the depth needed for more experienced users. For example, the chatbot failed to personalize its suggestions based on the participant’s long-standing vegan lifestyle. Additionally, the recipes offered were underwhelming, with a quinoa salad earning a lukewarm ‘B+’ rating.

What’s Missing?

The experiment revealed several common shortcomings across AI assistants: lack of proactivity, minimal emotional intelligence, and a tendency to oversimplify complex tasks. Despite these limitations, AI assistants showed potential as brainstorming tools and basic guides. However, they are far from replacing human experts in areas requiring emotional depth and nuanced decision-making.

A Glimpse into the Future

This experiment showcases the potential of AI in enhancing daily life, but it also underscores the technology’s current limitations. For AI to truly revolutionize our lives, it needs to evolve into a more proactive, emotionally intelligent, and autonomous assistant.
