SAS, a global leader in data analytics and artificial intelligence, has officially signed the European Commission’s AI Pact, becoming part of a growing number of companies committed to advancing responsible AI practices. Over 130 organizations have joined this initiative, aiming to align their internal AI systems with the principles outlined in the European Union’s AI Act.
This pact is a significant step towards building a more transparent and trustworthy AI ecosystem. The European Union AI Act sets forth crucial guidelines for identifying high-risk AI systems, promoting AI literacy, and establishing governance frameworks. SAS’s pledge is in line with its long-standing commitment to drive the next generation of autonomous decision-making by ensuring ethical innovation in AI applications.
Strengthening AI Governance
SAS has been actively working on AI governance, ensuring compliance with regulations even before the official enactment of the AI Act. According to Reggie Townsend, Vice President of Data Ethics at SAS, the company’s deep-rooted experience with data and AI technologies has helped it swiftly adapt to the evolving regulatory landscape. “Our almost 50 years of experience in data and AI have prepared us to meet the ethical challenges posed by powerful technologies. We are excited to collaborate with other organizations to shape a future where AI is both innovative and responsible,” Townsend said.
Collaborative Efforts for Trustworthy AI
The AI Pact encourages collaboration among its signatories, fostering a community for sharing best practices and testing AI solutions. SAS’s approach to AI mirrors this collaborative ethos. Globally, the company engages with regulators, policymakers, and industry leaders to help shape AI laws and standards.
In Europe, SAS has worked closely with the Swedish Institute for Standards to contribute to the development of harmonized standards for the EU AI Act. Meanwhile, in the United States, SAS has joined forces with several prominent organizations like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and EqualAI to ensure that their AI systems are secure, reliable, and aligned with global best practices.
Global Contributions Towards AI Regulation
SAS’s global efforts extend beyond Europe. In the U.S., the company is part of the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium and has collaborated with the Business Roundtable, EqualAI, and the Commonwealth AI Consortium—a coalition of global tech firms, research institutions, and nonprofits from six Commonwealth nations that are championing AI innovation and literacy. SAS has also advised government bodies on crafting AI regulations that foster innovation while ensuring safety.
With this new commitment, SAS continues its mission of responsible AI innovation, helping to shape global AI policies and ensure that emerging technologies are implemented ethically and transparently.
Looking Forward
As the EU AI Act moves towards full implementation, SAS and other signatories of the AI Pact will remain at the forefront of AI governance discussions. Their work will not only influence the future of AI but also set a precedent for how organizations can responsibly integrate AI into their operations.
By signing the AI Pact, SAS reaffirms its leadership in the AI space, setting an example for other companies navigating the complexities of AI regulations while fostering innovation.
