Google Cloud’s AI Co-Pilot Accelerates the Future of Electric Racing

Formula E has just shifted into a higher gear—thanks to artificial intelligence.

The all-electric racing championship has partnered with Google Cloud to unveil the Driver Agent, an AI-powered tool designed to revolutionize driver coaching and data accessibility. This move aims to democratize high-performance insights for all drivers, regardless of their team’s size or technical resources.

AI-Enhanced Driving: How It Works

Built on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI and enhanced by Google’s Gemini large language model, the Driver Agent analyzes real-time racing telemetry—such as lap times, speed, braking force, G-forces, and acceleration—to deliver actionable feedback. This data is converted into performance suggestions delivered by voice or text, helping drivers refine their technique in real-time.

By comparing a driver’s metrics to those of top-tier racers, the system highlights specific areas for improvement—whether it’s braking smarter or optimizing acceleration points. The aim? To give every driver access to championship-level coaching, even if they don’t have access to a full analytics team.

Championing Diversity in Motorsport

One of the most exciting aspects of this initiative is its focus on inclusion. As part of the collaboration, Google Cloud is working with More Than Equal, a talent development organization co-founded by former Formula One driver David Coulthard. The mission: to identify and nurture elite female driving talent.

The Driver Agent will be made available to five promising female racers from the More Than Equal Driver Development Program. These athletes will also gain access to simulation technology at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute of Sport and Centre of Excellence for Women in Sport in the U.K.

Leveling the Track With Technology

According to Barnaby Voss, Marketing Director at Google Cloud EMEA, the Driver Agent marks “a game changer for drivers on and off the track.” By removing financial and technical barriers to high-level data analysis, this tool opens the door for a more diverse and competitive motorsport ecosystem.

Beth Paretta, VP at Formula E, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’re helping to create a future where racing talent is determined by skill, not resources.”

What This Means for the Future of AI in Motorsports

The collaboration is another example of how AI is reshaping professional sports by amplifying access to elite-level tools. The Driver Agent could become a blueprint for other racing series and sports looking to level the playing field through technology.
