Revolutionizing Transit Safety with AI-Powered Cameras
In an innovative move to enhance public transit safety and accessibility, the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) has collaborated with Hayden AI to deploy cutting-edge AI-powered cameras on buses. This initiative aims to enforce parking regulations at bus stops, ensuring smoother and safer operations for passengers and transit employees alike.
The Problem of Unauthorized Parking
Unauthorized parking in bus stops poses significant risks to public safety and accessibility. It creates barriers for individuals with mobility challenges, forces bus operators to load and unload passengers away from the curb, and increases the likelihood of accidents and delays. During a recent pilot program, SacRT buses encountered a staggering 286 instances of parking violations obstructing bus stops.
How the Technology Works
The AI-powered cameras, mounted on up to 100 SacRT buses, are equipped to detect and record unauthorized parking in designated bus zones. When a violation occurs, the system captures a short video, a photograph of the vehicle’s license plate, and the exact time and location of the incident. This data is then sent to city officials for further review and citation processing, with Duncan Solutions providing the violation processing software.
Expanding the Scope of Enforcement
California transit agencies have recently been granted the authority to deploy forward-facing cameras for enforcing parking restrictions in transit-only lanes and designated zones. Beyond bus stops, the program is also expected to tackle bike lane violations later in 2025, reducing obstructions and improving safety for cyclists.
“This program will help improve accessibility for all riders, especially those with mobility needs, while keeping our transit service reliable and on schedule,” said Henry Li, SacRT’s general manager and CEO.
A Growing Trend in Urban Transit
Sacramento joins cities such as Oakland, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York in implementing automated enforcement technologies. Hayden AI, a California-based company specializing in AI and geospatial analytics, has been instrumental in driving this change. The company raised $90 million in growth equity financing in July, underscoring the increasing demand for such solutions.
