Azul, a company fully dedicated to Java, has unveiled its 2025 State of Java Survey & Report, providing key insights into the evolving role of Java in modern enterprise technology landscapes.
The Dominance of Java in Enterprise Applications
The survey, which gathered responses from over 2,000 Java professionals globally, emphasized Java’s pivotal role in enterprise applications. Impressively, 99% of participating organizations confirmed active Java usage, with nearly 70% stating that more than half of their applications are either built with Java or operate on a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). These numbers highlight Java’s enduring significance in powering critical business operations.
Shifting Away from Oracle Java
A major theme of the report is the growing shift away from Oracle Java due to its pricing and licensing models. The survey found that 88% of organizations are exploring alternatives to Oracle Java, a significant increase from 72% in 2023. The primary factors driving this trend include high costs (42%), a preference for open-source solutions (40%), and dissatisfaction with Oracle’s sales tactics (37%). This trend underscores the demand for cost-effective and flexible Java solutions in the enterprise space.
Mitigating Cloud Compute Costs
Java workloads contribute significantly to cloud expenses, with nearly two-thirds of respondents stating that more than 50% of their cloud compute costs are Java-related. Alarmingly, 71% reported paying for more than 20% unused cloud compute capacity. To address this, businesses are turning to strategies like utilizing newer, efficient processors (35%) and adopting high-performance JDKs (24%). These measures aim to optimize cloud resources and reduce unnecessary expenditures.
Challenges in DevOps Efficiency
The report also highlighted challenges in DevOps productivity. Dead or unused code was cited by 62% of respondents as a significant hindrance, while security vulnerabilities, such as lingering issues from Log4j, continue to impact nearly half (49%) of organizations. Furthermore, 33% of DevOps teams reported wasting over half their time addressing false positives in Java-related security concerns.
Java’s Role in AI Development
Java is increasingly becoming a cornerstone for AI-driven innovation. The report shows that 50% of enterprises are leveraging Java to build AI functionalities, surpassing other languages like Python and JavaScript among Java-centric companies. However, this shift comes with infrastructure demands, as 72% of organizations indicated the need to scale up compute capacity to support AI-enhanced Java applications. This development reaffirms Java’s adaptability and its position as a key player in future-ready technologies.
