IBM has announced a game-changing initiative to support five nonprofit organizations using AI-powered solutions to enhance urban sustainability and resilience.

As part of the IBM Sustainability Accelerator program, these nonprofits will receive access to cutting-edge IBM technology, including artificial intelligence and hybrid cloud solutions, along with expert guidance to drive meaningful change in their respective communities. This initiative aims to address pressing urban challenges, such as climate resilience, public health, and food security.

A Strategic Approach to Urban Sustainability

IBM’s selection process prioritized organizations that play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable populations while leveraging AI to create scalable, data-driven solutions. The program aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on building sustainable and resilient cities.

The Five Selected Nonprofits and Their AI Initiatives

  • C40 Cities: A global network of nearly 100 mayors working together to combat climate change. The organization will develop an AI-driven system to analyze risks from extreme heat and urban heat island effects, helping cities implement proactive strategies to mitigate these dangers.
  • Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy: An Indian nonprofit focusing on urban governance and technology-driven citizen engagement. The IBM Accelerator will assist in building a data analytics platform that consolidates city-level information to optimize resource allocation and long-term sustainability planning.
  • Kota Kita: An Indonesian organization dedicated to promoting equitable and sustainable urban development. With IBM’s support, the nonprofit will develop AI models to predict climate stressors, including natural disasters and water scarcity, ensuring targeted interventions for at-risk communities.
  • Mass General Brigham: The largest nonprofit hospital-based research system in the U.S. The organization will implement an AI-powered tool to predict hyperlocal extreme heat events, enabling healthcare professionals to identify at-risk patients and issue timely warnings.
  • U.N. World Food Programme: The world’s largest humanitarian organization tackling global hunger. IBM’s AI capabilities will enhance the WFP’s GeoTar geospatial tool, improving vulnerability mapping and optimizing food distribution strategies in disaster-stricken areas.
